Add a drop of liquid dish detergent. (This breaks the surface tension of the vinegar so when the li'l critters go in, they go down!)
Cover the cup with saran wrap or a sandwich baggie and poke tiny holes in the plastic with the end of a sharp knife. Use a rubber band to make the wrap stay on.
►Another way is to make a cone with a piece of paper or a coffee filter, making sure the end hole is tiny. Tape the paper to the cup so that it doesn't come out.Make sure no cider gets on the outside of the cup, or they will go there instead of IN. It takes awhile, and they'll sit on the top awhile before going in, but they will. The cup should be rinsed and fresh apple cider vinegar and soap replaced at least once a day. Dry the outside of the cup.
I usually set out 3 or 4 of these cups around the kitchen.
►One more method is to place a bit of banana or banana skin in a ziploc baggie that has tiny holes poked in it, but I don't know if they'll die that way or are just in fruit-fly jail!
(If you're doing Apologia General Science, you might need these instructions after Module 9!)
