Words in the King James Bible

The word "divers" in the Bible is an old spelling of the word "diverse."
So today I searched my Bible on my Kindle app (free), and here are some of the verses I found with "divers."

--Prov 20:10, 23 divers weights and divers measures (merchants may have false weights in order to charge you more);
--II Sam 13:18 a garment of divers colours
--II Chron 16:14 divers kinds of spices
--Psalm 78:45 He send divers sorts of flies among them.
--Matt 4:24 sick people that were taken with divers diseases
--Matt 24.7  famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
--Mark 1:34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases
--Mark 8.3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
--Titus 3.3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures
--Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
--Hebrews 13.9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.
--James 1.2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; v.3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

I found the "divers" definition in the King James Bible Companion, a little booklet that is about $0.50 at Gullion's Christian Supply Center (locations in Winston-Salem, Mt. Airy, and Statesville, NC).
Or you can view it online, but I like to keep my booklet with my Bible.

Remember when Joshua and then David houghed the horses of the enemy in time of war?  Well, now you can know what that means. =\  Well, it was war...

Edisto Island, SC

Last month our family was able to go on a free vacation!  Not often you get to do that.  Some friends of ours set it up for us to use their points or something (not sure how that works), and we got to stay an entire week at a really nice place on Edisto Island.  Still others gave us money that paid for our gas and our food the day we ate out.  So very thankful.  =)
Since Rebekah is getting married in a couple of weeks (!!!), it was especially nice for our family to be together for 7 whole days with nothing that "had to be done."
My sister and her family came up to be with us a couple of days.  We hadn't seen them in a while, and being a couple hours closer to them worked out great.  And my brother got to be with us a few days too. =)

We had such a great time!  It was wonderful.  =)

Cousins Day!
Glad it was mid-70's that day.  It was actually really nice for November!

sisters

Rebekah, Bethany, Elisabeth, Rachel - cousins! =)

hahaha!

Sunrise and Sunset
Love my kids! The girls are really close, and the twins are really close. For being boy-girl twins, unusually close I'd say. =)

♥Sisters, sisters... those who've seen us, know that not a thing could come between us!

He just acts as if he doesn't like it, haha!

Bethany took this pic of JohnDavid using his iPod!
One of my favorites.
The docks
I love pics with water, but I really love these at the docks!  This was right behind the place we were staying, within walking distance.  I loved walking on the floating docks that rise and fall w/ the tide.  They rock side-to-side as you walk on them.  I just love these pics. =)

The condo
We had the 2nd floor, but were two flights up because all the houses down there were on stilts. =)

Love the wrap-around balcony.  Having the 2nd floor meant we had
our whole balcony to ourselves with no one tromping by on the stairs.

Girls in the kitchen.  We cooked all our meals except for the day we went to Charleston.

Travis & Rebekah ♥

Love these twisty trees!  They were everywhere down there.

Free
Lots of free stuff to do, including miniature golf, tennis (but no pics), golf, and more that we didn't do.

In Charleston
Aircraft Carrier - there were 5 "tours" and the kids went on them all!
Also went on the submarine and the destroyer.

Love this =)

♪♫ The Hawks Trio like you've never seen them! =)

My Rebekah is getting married January 4, 2014, and she made a video of photos of her and her two best friends -- her sister Bethany, and her cousin Abigail.
We were at a small gathering the other week with bridesmaids and Moms and a few close friends, and she told Bethany and Abigail she had made them a video.
The tears flowed before they were even able to get the laptop powered up!
It was a sweet time.

Pics from that day:

The Hawks Trio has been singing together for almost 6 years.  They are really, really close.  =)  The video has photos from the last 7-8 years or so, but not in order.  Some sweet, some funny, and some hilarious! ;)
The dark-headed ones are my daughters, and the red-head is my niece. =)

-The first song in the video, "He Leadeth Me," was the first one they'd ever sung together. =)
-And Abigail is like a sister, so they all have liked the song "Sisters."
-And they had to have Dean Martin singing "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You."
At 08:45, in the pic of Abi down the hill, her fishing hook was stuck on something so Rebekah was keeping her from sliding in! -- You're nobody till somebody cares!  LOL.
-When they were little and rode in their Grandma's van, they all wanted her to play "Sunny Day, Rainy Day" on the CD.
-The last song, "Ashokan Farewell," was the first song they really learned together on the violin.

Causing Division

Proverbs 17:9b
"... he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends."
Every time I read this verse, I think this is so sad!!!

If someone tells you something about another person, take it with a grain of salt.  Give that other person the benefit of doubt.  Maybe that person did say those words, but not in the way it was conveyed to you.  Maybe they did what it was said they did, but not in the manner implied, and you haven't heard the whole story.
Or maybe it isn't even true at all.

Think: Why is this person even telling you this?  What is their motive?

Proverbs 18:13
"He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him."

If you do feel something against a friend, first pray for them.  Don't repeat it.  And especially if they're your brother or sister in Christ, you should be seeking to resolve matters.  You're family!  When you've been able to give it to God, and when you feel he is leading you, go to them in the spirit of meekness.  Don't go angry.  ♥

►When someone would gossip to my Mom, she would stop them from continuing and say, "Well, we'd better pray for them right now!"  And she would bow her head right there and pray!  Needless to say, she stopped hearing much gossip.  ;)

James 3:5-6
"Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth greath things.  Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and is set on fire of hell."

Graduation!

A little late... I've already posted about the upcoming wedding! haha!

My daughter and niece graduated this year, and put together their own graduation dinner and ceremony.  It was a lot of work, but looked really beautiful.  =)

Jesus Cares for Me

Sometimes you just get mad.  Sometimes you hurt for someone else who is (in your opinion) being treated unjustly.  And maybe there's a reason.  But sometimes you just would like an explanation but there is no explanation forthcoming.
Sometimes you just want to cry for them because you feel their hurt and confusion too.

And then sometimes you go to a church service that you almost didn't go to and hear exactly what you need from God.

Some things I heard from two different preachers this morning that don't seem connected, but they are some things I needed to hear:

-If the parents would turn [away from sin], the kids may follow.
-You have to keep turning from things -- bitterness, anger, a sharp tongue...
-I don't want my grandchildren to say, Well, Papaw did it.

-Faith.  Can you serve God when it's just you?  Do you need the pat on the back?
-Don't base your belief on what you feel; base it on what He promised.  Believe he will do what he said he would do.

And I knew all that is exactly what I needed to hear.  I need to let God work and not get angry.  I need to be an example to my kids.  I need to pray for others instead of dwelling on things.

And the invitational is the song, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," and you think, Yes, I need to turn to Him.  And the preacher asks the pianist to sing, and you hear the words you already know, but hadn't been thinking of, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face; and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace."
And you remember, when you're closer to Him, the things you're holding onto don't have such a hold anymore, and you can let go.  The things you need to turn from.

And then you hear your daughters singing in their room, "The Potter knows the clay..."
He does know us.  And He cares about us.  And He loves us.

And you know it will be all right.

I Peter 5:7
Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you.

Biology 101, Chapter 2 - Plants

Videos and other resources for this chapter

Leaf Identification

We used pages from Apologia's Botany (also in Apologia Biology) to identify the leaf mosaic, shape of leaf, venation of leaf, and leaf margin.  We also examined the color, texture, and any other outstanding features of the bark.
Thankfully we had two girls, sisters, who knew a lot about leaves!  They were able to identify nearly every tree or plant by the leaves that were brought to class.

This was from Apologia Biology Exp. 14.1 - Leaf Collection and Identification.
(worksheetguide)

Vascular Plants
Plants with xylem and phloem (tubes for transporting water and minerals) are vascular plants.

Nonvascular Plants
Non vascular plants, such as moss, algae, liverworts, or hornworts, are short and do not have xylem and phloem.  They grow near a water source so that they can absorb the moisture they need.

Vascular Plants and Turgor Pressure
When the vacuoles of plant cells are filled with fluid, they are rigid and cause the plant to stand upright.  This is called turgor pressure.  Food coloring allows us to see that water flowed up the xylem.

Cotyledons, testas, dicots, and monocots
A pinto bean can be divided into two halves.  These are the cotyledons - the plant's first food.  A plant cannot make its own food until it pokes out into the sun from beneath the soil.  Since a pinto bean seed has two cotyledons, the bean plant is a dicotyledon, or dicot.  Corn is a monocotyledon, or monocot.
Seeds have a covering called a testa that falls off as the cotyledons shrivel.  On a pinto bean, the testa is brown and speckled.
In this picture, you can see it still in the jar, and the shriveled cotyledons on the stem below the true leaves.

Tropisms
A tropism is a growth or movement toward a stimulus.
Growth toward light (the stimulus) is called phototropism.  Movement toward light is heliotropism.  Growth of roots toward water is hydrotropism.  Growth of roots downward is geotropism, or gravitropism.  Growth of a plant upward (even before it sees the sun!) is negative geotropism, or negative gravitropism.
If a plant is placed on it's side, it will curve and begin to grow upward once more.  Once righted, the plant will again curve back and grow upward, even in the absence of direct sunlight.  This can cause a plant's stem to look somewhat crooked.  =)

►More funny pics of bean experiments. =D

Transpiration
When the sun is shining, the stomata on the bottoms of leaves open to allow in carbon dioxide and release moisture (as well as oxygen).  Transpiration is also what causes the water to move upwards in the xylem -- nothing "sucks" the water upwards.  It is drawn upwards as water transpires out of the leaves.  This is made possible because of the properties of water -- the molecules tend to "stick" together because of being polar. (last year's Physical Science)
Covering leaves with a baggie then watering the plant well and placing it in sunlight will give evidence that the leaves do release water in transpiration.

All pics made by my students except for the pic of them at the table.
